Bali is probably one of the p[aces in the world with so many handicraft works. Anything is imitated into a miniature with wood, rattan, or more durable material, from simple photo frames up to a omplex palm trees are made in wood. There are hundred types of handicraft can be found at small shops in the villages and towns in central east Bali such as Kabupaten Gianyar with its town of Ubud and Sukawati. From Ubud upward to Kintamani mountain streches the road of Tegalalang on which left and right sides are etalages of such products.

The oldest handicraft is wooden sculptures, but this type is a fine art with the theme of super human figures, made in black ebony wood, very view were carved in other wood, especially what is called panggal buaya a fine clien white yelliwish wood grows locally in Bali. Aside from traditional theme in 1980s appeared new theme such as duck, frog, hyenas, ostrich, birds and many kind of animals not found in Bali also carved in wood. Frog for example was so popular among the people in many countries in America or Europe carved in funny ways such as frog sliding as skier, frog holding badmindon, frog playing volley, and others. On the other side carving of various type of ducks were so popular at the village of Nyuh Kuning. The demand from art importers from America and Europe also increased steadily giving an incentive to the carvers to produce more and more this type of craft.

The work on carving theme was not stop at the type of animals already in the production, but mid of 1988 a type of Mexican art appeared in Bali in the form of masks and cats. Known as mexican cats and mexican masks. This type of art was arrising conflict of copy right, the design was claimed by Balinese and American Laurel Birt artist. With this case then no one took risk to produce in numbers except only small numbers for personal souvenir.
