Traditional market of Bali has a unique characteristics compared to any other traditional markets in the world. Wihin this market almost 90% venders are women, so it looks like that this specific economic activities is dominated by women, although it is already influenced by advancement of technology this type of market is still as it was hundreds of years except their building and communication certainly have been changed. Secondly in bigger traditional market, especially in the cities there is not scheduled what is called market days that in the past vendors and buyers meeting every 3 days. But in the smaller towns and villages this schedule is still practiced
What products are offered in the traditional market? Traditionaly are cooking tools, farming tools, rice, coffee, farming products of Bali, traditional clothings, cooking materials, fish and meat. In the past, say until end of 17th century some bartering tradition was recorded until the introduction of Chinese coin, continued with the girals system. In the lack of transportation and the rugged land of central Bali this traditional way might have been continued much later periode. In the course of time this type of market is not closed again the influence of modern market, where in the past the market place was only a hall that is no permanent shop, or simply was only an open spot of land near the village meting hall where vendors and buyers meeting every 3 days. Since independence of Indonesia local government or local traditional villages have built building or more permanent hall for this traditional market, where vendors can hire a space or rooms at once can also used as sleeping or daily life.
Pasar Badung, the biggest traditional market in Bali which has been built in more modern appearance in the middle of Denpasar city has twice damaged by fire, a true embarassing management. The latest great fire was in March 2016, causing a total relocation of all vendors and a great loss among them. This is indeed kill the spirit of the vendors to rebuild their business again with pasar Badung. At almost the same time main Ubud market also damaged by fire.
Until undefinite tme some of the vendors of pasar Badung i now relocated to a place at West Denpasar at Jl. Cokroaminoto near Ubud bus station. This place was a cemetery in the past then hired by local retail company to build grociery base. After he company closing their activities this place long been dormant until the coming of vendors from pasar Badung, but not followed by most of the clothing and religious materials vendors who might bear losses the biggest. For travel porposes this new place is a bit difficult due to limited parking area.
