Merta Sari beach is one spot of beach almost in the middle of Sanur having white yellowish sand with wide size and very good sea for swimming of all age, around 300 meters to the north is known as Sindu Beach with the same characteristics. During lowest tide the bed far away is visible, so this beach can not be sailed by bigger ship within more then 1 km deep into the sea.
Merta Sari beach is very crowded during week end by the people of Denpasar who are looking for water recreation or just relaxing and see good views, as there is no hotel on the beach, while at Sindu beach there are many hotels. For children is very good place also as there are many persons hiring canoes. Good place also for parking the car and motor bike, as it is controled by special appointed person to take care.
In the past the people connected this beach with the king of demon or black magician that controlled the area of Sanur. It was so well talked by older people of 1960as that Sanur had the most frightening black magic practitioners, not only by people of south Bali, but almost all Bali. This is not ceased to be spoken in this modern time but still strange things people talked about Sanur. If this is true or not it is not our logic to judge this thing if it can be said myth. But the reputation of Sanur has made many artists and foregin writers were so attracted by the place, one paiting artist from Belgium Mr. Le Mayeur built his studio on the beach which is close to the first 5 star hotel Grand Bali Beach. He married Balinese woman, an artist of traditional dance and lived for years before his death of cancer. Today his heritage has became a museum and transfered ownership to local government.
On the west of Merta Sari beach deep around 400 meters inland is found an ancient inscription written in 2 languages and 2 alphabets in a village called Blanjong. This inscription has disclosed the mystery of Balinese history, that 1.100 year ago exactly in the year of 995 AD a prince name Sri Kesari Warmadewa was overruled Bali and succeeded in defeating his enemies. From this charter is also referred some other charters which in turn opening more and more the past of Bali. It is supposed that this charter was built on the beach as the name refers "Blanjong" meaning the cracked boat. So it can be estimated that along the time of 1100 years the sedimentation has reached around 400 meters, or the water border shifted so far.
Other good beach on Sanur area are many behind the hotels, but most of them are like being blocked by the hotels and it is not comfortable to have swimming around the area, that is why most people come to Merta Sari beach as it is still place for public.
