Dance and music are two elements that are strongly influence the aesthetic spirit of Balinese in all aspects of their life. It is true that any type of creation if it is not get the touch of art will only a function without interest. That is happened in every activities of Balinese not only in the aspect of ritual, but in almost all aspects art is present.
Based on 5 keynotes melodies of Bali traditional music has been able to enliven many traditional dances to mention a fiew of them such as Legong, Baris, Kebiar, Pendet, and various dances inspired by animal behavior. Since the beginning from those various dances found in Bali can be classified as sacred dances and amusement dances. These type of dances give spirit to various Bali traditional theatre such as Barong and Arja, and later are some new classical drama. Balinese theatre is a complet show from dances, music, clawns, singing, and intensive dialog taking the old story with current social context.
There is no record who was created these traditional dances, we can only guess that such as legong dance as the symbol of feminimity fomerly was amusement of the king or palace. It is universal that palace had a group of dancers or invite ouside group to perform at the palace. So it must be the artist that was close to the palace. That is why this dance is also called legong keraton or palace legong dance. Baris dance at the beginning was probably developed from war dance and in Bali has been performed only during temple ritual. In most desas ( villages ) during temple ceremonies there are sacred dances as panyembrama or welcome dance. Normally performed by young girls with bucket of flowers called Rejang and followed by some youth dances also bringing the same bucket of flowers called pendet. The movement of the dance is very simple only rely on both hand and legs. There are at some villages with different form of Rejang dances which are considered purely sacred dance and having exclusive relation with the history of the temple.
The people of Denpasar know an artist named I Wayan Rindi ( 1917 - 1976 ) who is considered the creator of Pendet dance. He live at the villge of Lebah within the area of Denpasar city who dedicated the whole of his life for traditional dances. The dance was presented at some tourist places such as Bali hotel. It is no clear record when was actually this dance was created during his active artist life. Pendet dance what we know at the tourism activities called panyembrama dance or welcome dance seems to have received the inspiration from the sacred dance of Rejang. In 1962 during the opening of Asian Games in Jakarta was recorded that a colossal show of 800 pendet dancers were performing. This big performance was conducted by the artist I Wayan Beratha with some modification. With this show the name of Pendet became widely known not only in Indonesia but also regionally in Asia.Angklung Music
